(KNZA)--A November 11th preliminary hearing has been set for a St. Joseph man accused of holding a woman hostage in a St. Joseph motel last week for nearly 11 hours.
44-year-old Roderick Ellis made his first appearance in a Buchanan County courtroom Tuesday by video conference on felony charges of kidnapping, first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action.
Police say his hostage, 41-year-old St. Joseph resident Rebecca Urban, was treated for a serious injury at a Kansas City hospital. A probable cause statement says Ellis surprised Urban last Wednesday and forced her at gunpoint into a room at the Motel 6 on Frederick Boulevard. He’s accused of shooting her in the arm and threatening her throughout the ordeal. Police say he also fired at officers trying to rescue the victim. No officers were hurt.
Ellis remains in the Buchanan County Jail, held without bond.
