Fire Prevention Week Proclaimed in Hiawatha
10/07/2015

(KNZA)--This has been proclaimed as Fire Prevention Week in Hiawatha.

Mayor Steffen Shamburg signed the proclamation Monday, which coincides with National Fire Prevention Week October 4th-10th.

This year’s theme is “ Hear the Beep Where You Sleep”, emphasizing the need for working alarms in every bedroom.

In Kansas, officials say nearly two-thirds of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep.

According to the proclamation, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a residential fire in half.

The proclamation urges Hiawatha residents to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of their home—including the basement.
