New Filters Approved For Atchison Water Plant
09/23/2015

(KAIR)--The Atchison City Commission has approved a bid to replace the filters in the city's water treatment plant.

City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont informed Commissioners during a meeting Monday afternoon that three bids had been received for the project, with the low bid coming from Walters-Morgan Construction. Pregont says “they were the same contractor we used on the ozone project at the water plant that's winding down right now. So our hope is that they can quickly transition from completing that project and get going with the filter upgrades over the next couple of months.”

The Commission accepted the bid with an unanimous vote.

Pregont adds that the new filters are part of the overall upgrade to the plant. He explains that “our new ozone system works in conjunction with the filtration process, and so in order for us to realize the full benefits of the ozone disinfection system, we are converting our existing filter media. Right now it operates physically, and we are converting those filters to biological filters...and so there is some air scour and some different components that need to be added...different electronic actuators in order to clean them out properly.”

Pregont says that with the approval, he estimates the project could be completed within the next four to five months.
