(KNZA)-- A new Brown County Clerk has been selected.
The Brown County Republican Central Committee Thursday evening selected current Deputy County Clerk Melissa Gormley by secret ballot from among two candidates to fill the unexpired term of the late Debbie Parker. Parker, who had held the position since 2000, died August 28th.
Gormley’s name will now be forwarded to Governor Sam Brownback for appointment to fill the term expiring in January 2017. The position is up for election in November 2016, and Gormley says she will seek election.
The other candidate was former county employee Shannon Scott of Everest. Each gave a short speech and answered questions from the twenty-nine committee members present.
Gormley has been a county employee since 2007, and has worked in the County Clerk’s office since April 2013. She has served as deputy county clerk since 2014 and has been carrying out the duties of the county clerk, as needed, during Parker’s illness and since her death.
