Health Warning Issued for Hiawatha City Lake
09/03/2015

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Lake is the latest area lake to be placed under a public health warning due to toxic levels of blue green algae.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said Thursday the lake is among eleven in the state on warning status. Two other area lakes also remain on the list--the Brown County State Fishing Lake and Nemaha State Fishing Lake.

Lakes under a warning status aren’t closed.  However, direct contact with the water by people, pets and livestock is strongly discouraged.

Fish caught in the lakes can be consumed as long as its rinsed with clean water.  However, you should consume only the fillet portion and discarded all other parts.
