(KLZA)-- Ground was broken on West 31st Street in Falls City Wednesday morning on the Wilderness Falls II housing project.
The about $2.8-million project will consist of seven duplexes for households with an annual income at or below 60% of the area median income.
Nebraska Lt. Governor Mike Foley attended the groundbreaking ceremony, noting that small communities across Nebraska are in need of additional housing, which could help them prosper.
First District State Senator Dan Watermeier told the audience he's pleased with what he sees happening in Falls City and southeast Nebraska. He complimented the city, EDGE and Excel Development Corporation.
The project will address a need for more housing, outlined in a 2010 Falls City Housing study. Excel Construction will serve as the contractor for the project. It is expected the new units will be move-in ready in May 2016.
Falls City native Paula Rhian, Development Director for the Excel Development Group, said the units will be along a street running north from the current units toward Community Medical Center. Each single story unit will include an attached garage, refrigerator, stove, microwave and have a washer and dryer.
The four 2-bedroom units will rent for $475 per month, the eight 3-bedroom units will rent for $515 per month and the two 4-bedroom units will cost $560 monthly.
Rhian praised the people Excel has worked with in Falls City including City staff and EDGE.
