(KNZA)--The Brown County Commission has adopted a 2016 budget of nearly $9.8 million that contains a slight property tax levy decrease.
The action followed a public hearing Monday during which county resident Bill Pollock asked several questions about the budget.
The budget contains an estimated tax rate of 36.946 mills, which is to generate $5.5 million.
Even though the budget contains about a 4-tenths of mill levy decrease, the county will collect $447,000 more in tax revenue due to a increase in the county’s assessed valuation.
Hiawatha CPA Jim Scherer, who prepared the budget, said the county’s assessed valuation has increase nearly $21 million since 2014. As a result, he said a mill will raise just over $149,000 compared to nearly $129,000 in 2014.
