Atchison City, County To Discuss New EMS Facility
08/19/2015

(KAIR)--Officials with the city of Atchison, during a meeting Tuesday afternoon, presented the Atchison County Commission with a resolution passed by the City Commission, asking them to reconsider their decision to build a new county wide EMS facility just outside of city limits.

City Manager Trey Cocking says the city wants a chance to present their case to the county, and to the public as a whole. He says “what we asked the county for was, we would just like to be able to make a presentation on what a consolidated service would look like. We weren't asking them to say yes or no to that idea, but just to be able to have a longer conversation about that idea, and just get those thoughts, and get everybody on the same page. A lot of the objections that people have out there can be dealt with with a contract. So we just really want to have that public discussion about it. At the end of the day, if the county wants to move ahead with their current plan, they would be more than welcome to.”

County Commission Chair Bill Pohl says he denied a request made by the city during the meeting, to hold off on proceeding with the project for one month. He told city officials that “I feel that you guys pretty much got your information together...what you want to present, I'll go for two weeks, and I am telling you right up front, you are probably not going to change two of our minds, but if you want to present this, we will listen to it."

Pohl says that the city “wants a consolidation, they want to put it into the fire station, they want to gain control over it, which...I don't want to lose control over it, and then they will come up with some kind of figure on what it is going to cost to run it.”

The City Commission will make a formal presentation to the county on September 8th. Pohl says construction bids for the facility, which were scheduled to be put out this week, will be put on hold until after that meeting takes place.
