(KAIR)--A new fiber network franchise could soon be coming to Atchison.
That, according to Atchison City Manager Trey Cocking, who says the issue was presented to the Atchison City Commission during their meeting Monday afternoon. He says that “Kansas Fiber Network, which is a company owned by local telecoms throughout Kansas, they are looking to expand their fiber network into Atchison. They will build the backbone in town, which will allow for service to educational, institutional, and governmental agencies, and then they are looking for one of the local telecoms to come in and provide service directly to homes.”
Cocking says the company will start building the system in the next six months, and it will be probably be approximately a year and a half before it is fully operational.
Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt the agreement with Kansas Fiber Network.
