Successful Water Rescue In Pottawatomie Co
08/17/2015

(KNZA)--A water rescue early Monday morning in Pottawatomie County, where two people aboard a raft got lost on the Kansas River.

According to Sheriff Greg Riat, Riley County Police were notified by a concerned relative that the pair might be lost somewhere between Wamego and Manhattan.

Police then notified the Sheriff's Office around 4:30 Monday morning and the search was launched.

Officers with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism put an air-boat in the water at Wamego and headed West, locating the rafters shortly before 7:15 in the morning about a half-mile west of St. George.

The raft was followed by the officers, and was able to safely dock at the St. George boat ramp.

The pair, found in good condition, had apparently set out on the water around 4:00 Sunday afternoon.

It's believed their cell phone batteries had gone dead, leaving the relative unable to contact them, leading to the search and rescue.

Agencies involved in the search and rescue were the Kansas Department of Wildlife,Parks and Tourism, Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office, Manhattan Fire Department water rescue unit, the Riley County Police Department and  the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office.
