(KAIR)--An arrest is made in connection with counterfeit currency circulating in the Atchison area.
The problem began last spring, with the Atchison Police Department focusing heavily on who might be behind the creation of the funny money.
Police Chief Mike Wilson says Rushville, Missouri resident Daniel Singleton was taken into custody Friday in connection with the ongoing case. “Specifically, this person is charged with possessing some of those counterfeit bills at a local retail store on July the 4th,” Wilson tells MSC News.
The 36-year-old Singleton was booked into the Atchison County Jail on charges of making false information and forgery.
There's no immediate word on exactly what role he may have played in the counterfeiting of the bills.
Wilson says the fake cash has been appearing locally since late spring, found at both businesses and at local banks. “The investigation does continue, not only into the origination of how these bills were made, but the passing of these bills.”
Wilson calls the spread of the money “sporadic,” with the fake bills showing up in small batches at random times instead of in a large quantity all at once.
The money ranges from $5 bills to $50 bills.
