(KNZA)--The Prairie Hills USD 113 Board of Education has voted to re-instate a 4th section of kindergarten at the Sabetha Elementary School for this coming school year.
Superintendent Todd Evans says the Board took the action Monday evening on a 5-1 vote following a lengthy discussion regarding the benefits of a reduced teacher to student ratio at the kindergarten level. Board member Jim Scoby cast the lone no vote. Board member Jeff DeMint wasn't present.
The 4th section of kindergarten had been eliminated as part of a budget reduction package approved by the Board last April.
Evans says they are expecting to have 53 kindergarten students at Sabetha for the coming school year.
Following a hearing drawing no public comment, the Board adopted the 2015-16 budget as published.
Evans says the $17.1 million budget contains a slight mill levy increase for the supplemental general fund budget to make up for a loss in state funding.
He said the total mill levy paid by taxpayers will depend on which of the former two school districts making up USD 113 they reside in, as both have bond issues from before consolidation.
The total levy for former USD 488 taxpayers will be 50.839 mills, while the total levy for taxpayers in the former USD 441 will be 49.249 mills.
