(KNZA)-- The Hiawatha City Commission has directed the immediate removal of two houses deemed unsafe.
The Commission Monday evening approved a resolution for the emergency condemnation of property located at 913 and 915 Pottawatomie Street.
City Attorney Don Cashman says both houses, which have been vacant for a number of years, pose an immediate hazard to the public. Cashman said the roofs on a portion of both houses have caved in. In addition, he says local residents are entering the structures to remove the contents and depositing unwanted items in the front yard.
The Commission accepted the low bid submitted by Aller Construction for the demolition of the structures at a cost of $10,400. It was among three bids received. The cost will be assessed against the property.
In a related matter, the Commission approved the additional expenditure of up to $15,000 for the demolition of unsafe structures in the city. City Administrator Mike Nichols says the $10,000 budgeted for this year has already been utilized.
