(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Board of Education has voted to reinstate the accelerated reader program for two years, contingent on the receipt of donations to fund the program.
Nick Blevins with the Hiawatha Alumni Association told the Board Monday evening that the Association has been working with the Hiawatha Education Foundation to raise the funds needed to reinstate the program for a two year period.
Blevins said the Alumni Association will donate the funding for the first year, about $3,200. He says they are asking individuals and other groups to help raise the funding for the second year.
The board voted in April to cut the program as part of $138,000 in budget reductions approved for the 2015-2016 school year.
The Board heard a presentation from a group of teachers last month on how the web-based program is used at the elementary and middle schools. The teacher's urged the Board to keep the program, which they said provides several benefits.
