(KNZA)--The cities of Hiawatha and Netawaka are among six Kansas communities that will receive a total of $9 million in funding from USDA Rural Development to improve their water and wastewater systems.
The announcement was made recently by USDA Rural Development Director Patty Clark.
Hiawatha will receive a nearly $1.4 million loan and $927,000 grant to help finance additional improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system. The funding will be used to rehabilitate 8-thousand feet of sewer pipe and 50 manholes, and replace about 12-thousand feet of sewer line.
The Kansas Department of Commerce is also providing a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant for the project.
Netawaka will receive a $300,000 loan and $245,000 grant to rehabilitate the city’s existing water storage tank and replace the water distribution system. The project will install 16,600 feet of main water line, 85 service meters, and fire hydrants
The funding is provided through USDA’s Water and Environmental Program.
