(KMZA)--A successful water rescue Monday night in Pottawatomie County.
That word from Sheriff Greg Riat, who says two canoeists became stranded on the Kansas River, east of the Belvue Boat Ramp. The pair had been attempting to return to the boat ramp, but found themselves stranded due to the hazardous river conditions, following heavy rains that accompanied regional thunderstorms.
The Sheriff's Office was joined by a number of area rescue agencies, including Belvue Fire, Wamego City Fire, Louisville Fire, Wamego EMS, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, St. Mary's Police Department and Pottawatomie County Emergency Management, in bringing the stranded pair to safety.
The Manhattan Fire Department's Water Rescue was called to assist, and utilized the Sheriff's Office rescue boat to bring the individuals to safety.
Both were treated at the boat ramp by Pottawatomie County EMS for signs of hypothermia and then released.
Riat says this is the second water rescue on the Kansas River in two weeks, with the first occurring on the night of May 16th, east of the boat ramp in St. George.
He urges anyone using the river for recreational purposes to take into consideration the weather and river conditions, with both rescues involving hazardous conditions for the rescuers.
