(KAIR)--The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is investigating a Monday afternoon vehicle fire and an attempted vehicle theft from a residence located near Oskaloosa.
Sheriff Jeff Herrig says an unknown suspect attempted to remove a vehicle from a residence located in the 12000 block of eighty-second street. However, the vehicle got stuck at the end of the nearly quarter mile driveway. The suspect left the vehicle and returned to the residence where he allegedly set fire to a second vehicle before leaving the scene.
A Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter was called in to assist local law enforcement in the search for the suspect. However, the search was called off after a hour and a half when the suspect could not be found.
The suspect is described as a white male, approximately six foot tall, wearing a black sweatshirt and carrying a red bag.
Law enforcement from McLouth, Oskaloosa, Valley Falls, and Perry also assisted in the search.
