(KLZA)-- The Falls City Public School District has been notified that two grants have been awarded to the district, both funded by the USDA.
The USDA Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Grant will help increase, fresh fruit and vegetable consumption at the elementary and middle school. The grant will provide fruits and vegetables to children through the school day. This program is designed to help combat childhood obesity by teaching children the importance of developing healthy eating habits.
The grant provides $11,000 to North School, $8,000 to South School and $8,000 to Middle School. The grant application was co-authored by Shelly Leyden Curriculum Director, and Christi Chapple, Nutrition Services Director.
The second grant awarded to District 56 is the National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistance Grant. Funding for this program is provided by the USDA for the purpose of awarding funds to purchase new and or updated school meal program equipment.
The funds will allow District 56 to purchase two, new ovens for the Falls City Middle School kitchen. The current ovens are 38 years old. The grant is in the amount of $7,315. Once again the grant application was co-authored by Leyden and Chapple.
