Completion Date Set for Hiawatha Walking Trail
05/21/2015

(KNZA)--After delays, the Hiawatha fitness and school trail project should be  completed by July 3rd.

That’s what City Administrator Mike Nichols told City Commissioners Monday evening.

Nichols said the project was placed on hold after it was discovered that the ground behind the high school where the trail is to be constructed was saturated in ground water and unstable.  A geotechnical engineering firm was hired to study the issue and has recommended the installation of a ground water collection ditch.

Commissioner Toni Hull expressed frustration that the project hasn’t been completed yet, noting it was approved in October 2012, but remains undone three years later.

Following discussion, the Commission approved a change order for  the project that includes construction of the water collection ditch.  The change order adds a total of more than $19,000 to the project cost and the addition of 8 working days to the contract.

Nichols said if the project isn’t completed on schedule, the city can assess liquidated damages against the contractor.
