(KAIR)--The city of Atchison is going to the dogs, but in a good way.
During a recent meeting of the Atchison City Commission, Commissioners approved a plan submitted by the park board to have the ballpark at Fourteenth and Laramie converted into a dog park.
City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont says the approval is just the first step in the process, and quite a bit of work remains to be done and many things to consider including spacing, fencing parking and the placement of water lines so people can provide water for their dog. He adds that “we have to come up with a plan on how to affordably come up with some of the equipment and signage. There is just six or seven or eight things that we have to make plans for and get right within that $25,000 budget number that we got in there.”
Commissioner Charlie Purdue questioned the location of the park, and suggested that other locations be looked at. Pregont says the park board has been working on this project for about five years, and the proposed location was deemed to be the most suitable.
Pregont says that he hopes to have the park opened by the fall, but weather conditions could push it back.
