(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Board of Education has been urged to keep a computerized reading management program that’s slated to be cut as part of $138,000 in budget reductions approved for next school year.
Several teachers presented information to the Board this week about the Accelerated Reader Program, stressing the importance of the program.
The board was told it motivates students to grow as goal-focused readers and enables teachers to set and monitor personalized goals.
The board was told 490 elementary and middle school students currently utilize the program.
In other business, the board approved a resolution to non-renew the contract of Elementary School Librarian Janet Prochaska. Her position is being eliminated as part of the budget reductions for next school year.
The board accepted several resignations. They include 4th grade teachers Amber Boeckman and Emily Chandler along with 8th grade teacher Shelia Heinen. Also accepted was the resignation of Mark Carter as head high school cross country coach and assistant high school track coach. In addition, the board accepted the retirement resignation of Judy Jackson as high school librarian.
All the resignations are effective at the end of the current school year.
