(KLZA)-- Following a lengthy discussion Monday night the Auburn City Council voted 4-2 to move forward with improvements at Farington Field so the airport can continue to receive federal funds.
The City was asked to approve taking on responsibility for a loan of up to $250,000 for a new hangar at the airport. Mayor Scott Kudrna says without the hangar, the airport faces the loss of federal funding. An airport must be able to house 10 planes to qualify for federal funds.
Mayor Kudrna said rental fees from planes would help pay off the loan for the new hangar, but it is unlikely the rent money would be enough to pay off all of the loan. There is currently a waiting list for plane owners wanting to house their planes in Auburn.
A new office building was constructed at the airport in the past few years and currently the Auburn Airport Authority is awaiting word on a grant to pay for a hard-surfaced runway. Notification of a grant for the hard-surfacing is anticipated anytime.
The Council voted 4-2 to back the loan. Council members Tom Clark and Jeff Jeanneret cast the nay votes. It is anticipated the annual payment for the city on the hangar will be about $23,000 for 10 years. Mayor Kudrna said without the City recently paying off a bond issue, they would not be in position to take on responsibility for the loan.
