Update On Tecumseh Prison Situation
(KLZA)-- Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts and Department of Corrections Director Scott Frakes conducted a news conference Tuesday morning to provide updates on the events at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution Sunday and Monday in which two inmates died and staff members were injured.
Frakes said the prison remains secure with no more incidents having occurred. The Fire Marshall has assessed and cleared all of the living units.
Staff members are working 12-hour shifts to address the immediate needs of the facility with staff from other Department of Corrections facilities helping out.
Frakes says outside experts will be brought in to investigate the revolt at the prison. The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating crimes that may have occurred during the uprising and charges will be filed. Those that had offenses that are deemed misconduct will be dealt with internally.
Former employees at the prison at Tecumseh and area residents have said they felt officials should have known such an incident was imminent. Frakes said it is easy after the fact to make such statements. Governor Ricketts called those comments irresponsible, calling it Monday morning quarterbacking. He said a strategic plan is to be in place by fall for how to deal with corrections in Nebraska.
Autopsy’s on the two prisoners that died during the uprising are to be conducted Tuesday. Frakes says he does not yet have a dollar amount estimate of damage.
