Catholic School in Axtell to Close
05/11/2015

(KMZA)--St. Michael’s Elementary School in Axtell will close at the end of the current school year.

Father Albert Hauser, pastor of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell, recently made the announcement. The last day of school will be May 20th.

The closure is being attributed to a declining enrollment. Currently, the school has 24 students in 1st through 6th grades.  There are three teachers and three combination classrooms.

The school will celebrate the last Mass for the students on May 14th.

The school officially began in the fall of 1889, but closed in 1894 because of declining numbers.

The school remained closed until 1913, when construction began on a new school.  The basement was completed, but harvests were poor, so the rest of the school wasn’t completed until 1917.

The new school was dedicated on August 30th, 1917, and on September 3rd school began with 50 students in grades one through eight.

In 1919, high school was added, but was ended in 1941.  7th and 8th grades were discontinued in 1986.

This school year, the school celebrated 125 years.
