(KLZA)-- Most everyone driving by Falls City High School Tuesday around noon slowed down and stared at the scene in the parking lot. Falls City High School students surrounded two wrecked cars, there were ambulances, State Patrol vehicles and Patrol officers, Sheriff’s Department personnel, Falls City Police Officers, school teachers and administrators, even a hearse.
Fortunately, it was all part of a simulated wreck staged by the Nebraska State Patrol, assisted by many including student-victims and sponsored by a first-year group at Falls City High School, Students Against Destructive Decisions.
Nebraska State Patrol Captain Lance Rogers explained the program simulated a serious motor vehicle crash involving teenagers with alcohol impairmment, and treating it like the students were not properly restrained in the vehicles.
Captain Rogers says they get a wide range of responses from students. He said while you can show pictures in a classroom and talk about it, but a live demonstration of the personal impact helps bring the point home. Tuesday’s simulated event included a drunk driving arrest and a death of one of the students.
Sandra McNeely is the sponsor for the Falls City High School program. She served as narrator for the program.
Bailey Bindle, a junior at Falls City High School is the President of the SADD organization. She said a prevention group was needed at the school. The idea is to get students to think before they act.
Bindle said she felt the event really touched some people attending. Bindle says she would like to see this be an annual event. She says any student at Falls City High School can be a part of the Students Against Destructive Decisions program.
Tuesday was the annual Lunch on the Lawn Day at Falls City High School. Following the program all the students and staff enjoyed lunch outside.
