(KNZA)--The City of Hiawatha officially has a new Mayor, and City Commissioner.
City Clerk Vivian Constable administered the Oath of Office to Steffen Shamburg as Mayor at the beginning of Monday evening’s City Commission meeting. John Sheeran was then sworn as the new Commissioner of Police following his appointment to fill Shamburg’s former seat.
Shamburg and Commissioner Toni Hull voted in favor of his appointment, while Commissioners Bill Collins and Irv Schwalm voted for the appointment of Dennis Greer to the position.
The tied vote was broken by City Attorney Don Cashman, who cited Sheeran’s experience as a former six year Commissioner in making his decision. Cashman said the city has a lot of projects going on that Sheeran is familar with, and it would take time to get anyone else up to speed. Sheeran was among five applicants for the position.
In his first duty as Mayor, Shamburg read and signed a proclamation recognizing outgoing Mayor Crosby Gernon’s 9 years of service to the community, which he then presented to Gernon. A farewell reception for the outgoing Mayor was held prior to the meeting.
Shamburg said he has some “big shoes to fill” and looks forward to serving the city.
