(KAIR)--A Muscotah woman in custody, charged with the alleged abuse of her three-month-old son.
Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie says 22-year-old Heidi Pace was arrested Tuesday at her residence on a district court warrant for abuse of a child and aggravated battery.
Laurie says the investigation started after his department was notified of the alleged abuse on April 8th by a social worker at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. She told authorities that there was a three-month-old child from Atchison County at the hospital that was believed to be a victim of abuse or some type of harm. The child was originally taken to the Horton hospital, but was flown by helicopter to Children's Mercy as soon as the injuries were discovered.
The child remains hospitalized in serious condition with a permanent brain injury and damage to his spleen.
Pace remains in the Atchison County Jail, held on a $100,000 bond.
