(KNZA)--The city of Hiawatha plans to seek a share of $12 million in special Community Development Block Grant funding being made available through the Kansas Department of Commerce to fund improvements to the Bruning Ball Park.

The City Commission Monday evening approved an agreement with Lawrence-based Governmental Assistance Service to prepare the grant application at a cost of nearly $9,000.  The Commission also approved an agreement with Lawrence-based BG Consultants for preliminary architectural and engineering services at a fee of $5,000.

The city plans to seek $350,000 in grant funding, which is the maximum available.  The grant requires a 10 percent match.  The city’s total cost would be $49,500.

Applications are due June 1st.  Awarded projects will be announced July 15th.
