(MSC News)--A 23-year-old Atchison man is jailed in Atchison County following a multi-county pursuit early Thursday evening.
The suspect is identified by authorities as Ryan Marcas Brownfield, who, during the pursuit, allegedly sent a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper to the hospital.
According to Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie, the pursuit began when a deputy attempted to stop a Nissan Armada, that was later found to have been stolen from an Atchison vehicle dealership, which matched the description of a vehicle spotted near the scene of an Atchison County burglary.
The pursuit ran from Atchison County into Jefferson County, and then into Jackson County, where a deputy attempted to use stop sticks to deflate the tires of the suspect vehicle, east of Denison, on Highway 16.
It's alleged that Brownfield drove the SUV off the roadway attempting to run down the deputy who managed to escape unharmed. However, Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse says Brownfield's maneuver caused the SUV to collide with a vehicle driven by a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper.
Brownfield attempted to flee the scene, making his way back into Jefferson County, but was forced off the roadway a short time later, when an Atchison County Sheriff's Deputy successfully deployed stop sticks. He tried to run on foot, fleeing into a nearby field. That attempt was short lived, as he was apprehended and transported to the Atchison County Jail where he remains.
Brownfield made his first appearance in Atchison County District Court Friday morning where bond was set at $20,000. Formal charges, expected in all three counties where the pursuit happened, have not yet been filed.
The Trooper involved in the crash with Brownfield was transported to the Holton Community Hospital where he was assessed and released.
