(KAIR)--A Leavenworth man pleads guilty to fraudulently collecting over $46,000 in government benefits.
According to the office of U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom, 42-year-old Michael Munsterman pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government funds Wednesday in Federal Court, admitting he received Supplemental Security Income, food stamps and Medicaid despite not qualifying for those benefits.
Prosecutors say Munsterman applied for SSI benefits in April 2011 claiming that he had a drug-induced heart condition that kept him from working. However, he failed to reveal that he owned and operated a heating and cooling company that provided him with a substantial income while receiving the benefits.
Sentencing is set for June 16th. He faces a maximum penalty of 10-years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.
As part of a plea agreement, Munsterman must pay restitution to the federal agencies that provided him with the illegally-gained services.
