(KAIR)--Officials with the city of Atchison have updated the city's fire codes.
City Commissioners unanimously voted to incorporate the 2012 International Fire Code and the 2012 National Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code during a meeting held Monday afternoon.
Fire Chief Mike McDermed says the codes are updated approximately every three years, and it is up to the local government as to if they want to adopt them right away. Atchison has not adopted them since 2003 because not many significant changes were seen in the codes.
McDermed adds that the update comes as the state of Kansas prepares to adopt the same fire codes.
