(KAIR)--A ceremony Tuesday in Atchison drew nearly 50 guests as the signage to mark a stretch of K-7 Highway in honor of fallen Atchison Police Sergeant David Enzbrenner was unveiled.

Enzbrenner's widow, Kerri, spoke at the ceremony, saying she is thankful for the support shown by the community following the death of her husband. She says that she has “good people that are always here with me...and I probably didn't even give enough recognition to the city as a whole because they provided for my family in unbelievable ways, and this is kind of a nice cap off of all that.”

She told those gathered that the portion of dedicated highway holds a special meaning for her family. David Enzbrenner is buried along that highway and both his family and hers live near it, so it is fitting that the highway now stands as a memorial to him.

Police Chief Mike Wilson said they remember and honor Enzbrenner every day in the department, but the signs are a permanent reminder to everyone of their fallen comrade.

Among others who shared their reflections of Enzbrenner were Atchison Mayor Dave Butler and State Representative Jerry Henry.

The signage, installed following the ceremony, formally marks the portion of  K-7 running from the north city limits of Atchison, north to the U.S. Highway 36 junction in Troy, as the Sergeant David Enzbrenner Memorial Highway.

Funds for the signage were raised through local efforts.

Enzbrenner was killed in the line of duty in December of 2011, fatally shot when assisting with the delivery of a nuisance notice in Atchison.
