02/17/2015

(KAIR)--An Atchison man, convicted on child abuse and theft related charges in two separate cases was sentenced Friday to two years in prison.

In the first case, 21-year-old Brett Betts was sentenced to twenty four months in prison on charges of child endangerment and aggravated battery. Judge Martin Asher suspended the sentence and placed Betts on twenty four months of supervised probation.

In the second case, Asher sentenced Betts to twenty four months in prison on charges of burglary of a dwelling and misdemeanor theft. After his release, he will be placed on twelve months of supervised probation. Asher ordered that the probation sentences in both cases be served consecutively.

Betts was arrested in February 2014 after he caused severe bodily harm to his four month old daughter. He was released on bond and awaiting trial on charges stemming from that incident when he entered a residence undergoing construction in December, and removed two saws from the property.
