(KNZA)--A public hearing is set for next month, regarding the fate of the Doniphan West Primary School in Highland.
USD 111 Superintendent Rex Bollinger says the possible closure is proposed by the school board as a proactive approach to handle state budget cuts. “We're losing budget authority from the state. We've been cut about $26,000,” Bollinger tells MSC News. “We fully expect, probably, some more cuts coming this spring. Also looking at our budgets for next year, the Governor's budget, or proposed budget, is actually showing that less money's going to be coming to the schools for the next two years. Our board is trying to be proactive and trying to shift some resources around to where we can still provide the same things that we have here.” Bollinger says being able to retain programs, such as preschool, art and music, is a goal of the board.
Should the primary school be closed, approximately 85 students would be moved to the Doniphan West Elementary School, near Denton. Initial savings is estimated between $70,000 and $75,000.
No staff terminations are planned, but one position, being vacated due to a resignation, will not be filled.
The public hearing regarding the proposed closure is scheduled for the evening of March 9th, at 6:00 in the Doniphan West High School Commons.
