Pay Increase For Richardson County K-9 Unit Deputy
02/12/2015

(KLZA)-- Richardson County Commissioners have agreed to a pay increase for Deputy Sheriff Lew Barker who is the Sheriff’s Department K-9 handler.

When Sheriff Don Pounds took office in January Barker voluntarily took a pay cut when he went from Sergeant back to Deputy to concentrate on duties with the K-9.

Sheriff Pounds said the K-9 Unit is very important to the department and his goals that the K-9 Handler will be paid a wage halfway between the pay of a Deputy and a Sergeant.

The new salary will be $1,810 per month.  Sheriff Pounds said the Supreme Court has ruled K-9 handlers should also be compensated three-and-a-half hours per week for the home care of the K-9.  That was also approved by Commissioners on Tuesday.

Currently the Richardson County Sheriff’s Department is looking to hire two full-time deputies to fill out the roster.
