(KAIR)--Airplane hangers at Atchison's Amelia Earhart Memorial Airport, destroyed by a storm last summer, will soon be replaced.
City Manager Trey Cocking came before City Commissioners during a meeting Monday afternoon to report on the project's progress.
Cocking says the process has been ongoing for several months. The city first spent several months filing claims with their insurance company. Then, a firm drew up specific plans for the hanger before bids for construction were sought. Cocking says that two bids came in last week, including one that was very competitive.
Cocking adds that funding for the hanger has also been addressed. He says that “Our whole idea with airport hangers has been to take the insurance money...insurance money does not pay for today's modern style hangers...And then we need to get with the airport advisory group to see if rents will support construction, or come close to supporting construction, so there is very little impact on taxpayers.”
Cocking says the most expensive option to replace all eight hangers from the lowest bid is approximately $317,000, with $137,000 coming from the city's insurance.
