AARP Scam Hits Brown County
02/03/2015

(KNZA)--Another scam, preying on the elderly, is being reported in the local area, with Brown County Sheriff John Merchant saying his office has received  a number of complaints about it in recent days.

The scam works like this: a phone call is received, with the caller claiming to be a representative of AARP, and informs the would be victim that they are entitled to a free medical alert bracelet.

The caller then makes the claim that county residents will be awarded a $3,000 gift card, but to claim it, personal financial information must be provided.

Merchant has contacted AARP, and the organization confirms that the calls are a scam, and a complaint has been filed with their fraud division.

Merchant says no personal information should be provided whenever an unsolicited call is received, and tells residents to simply hang up and notify law enforcement.
