(KNZA)--Special recognition was given to a local business and two individuals during the Annual Meeting of the Hiawatha Chamber of Commerce Thursday evening at the Francis Sewell Plamann History Center.
Sonic Drive-In was presented with the “ Business of the Year” award, which was accepted by General Manager Todd Tibbetts.
Longtime Brown County Developmental Services employee Debbie Trant was honored as the “ Civil Servant of the Year.”
Beth Mikita, who chaired last year’s 100th Annual Hiawatha Halloween Frolic, was presented with the “ Volunteer of the Year” award.
Also during the meeting, new Chamber Administrator Eric Thompson was formally introduced. “I really am looking forward to bringing everything I've learned," Thompson told those assembled. "Working for the National Guard you spend a lot of time setting things up, getting things ready to go, and then everybody comes in and you're able to execute a great plan.” Thompson will officially begin work next month after twenty-four years with the Kansas National Guard.
Teresa McAnerney of the non-profit organization Northeast Kansas Enterprise Facilitation was the guest speaker. McAnerney discussed the program which provides free confidential business coaching to entrepreneurs in five northeast Kansas counties. She said the organization has served 173 clients in the area, which has resulted in the creation of 124 businesses and 436 jobs.
