CoOportunity Health Insurance to Liquidate
01/28/2015

(NRN / KLZA)-- More than 40-Thousand Nebraskans, including city employees in Pawnee City and Pawnee County employees are looking for new health insurance with the announcement that Co-Oportunity Health will be liquidated.

The Iowa Insurance Commissioner has determined Co-Opportunity cannot be rehabilitated and must be liquidated.

The court appointed Iowa as the rehabilitator for Co-Oportunity Health. The cooperative created under the new federal health insurance law cannot cover the medical claims made by its clients. Claims are being paid by the state Guaranty Associations in Iowa and Nebraska.

Sarah Waldman, Senior Vice President of Nebraska Blue Cross/Blue Shield,  notes the co-op was developed under provisions of the Affordable Care Act, which has changed the landscape of health insurance.

She says there are federal programs for re-insurance and programs intended to help smooth the transition. If the court approves, liquidation should take effect at the end of next month.

Earlier this week the Pawnee City Council voted to change their healthcare coverage for City employees to United Healthcare.
