(KNZA)--A Topeka teenager has been sentenced to nearly 9 years in prison on charges in a Holton child abuse case.
Jackson County Attorney Shawna Miller says 18-year-old Koylen McKinney was handed the sentence Friday in Jackson County District Court on charges of aggravated battery, abuse of a child and aggravated endangerment of a child.
McKinney pleaded guilty to the charges last month, avoiding a jury trial that had been set for this month. That came after Miller announced she would seek an aggravated sentence from the jury if he was convicted.
The charges stem from acts of violence against a then 7-month-old infant in April of last year.
Miller says the infant was hospitalized at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City for an extensive period of time and wasn’t expected to live.
She says the child continues to suffer seizures, is legally blind, unable to walk or talk, and must be fed by a feeding tube. Miller says the infant’s mother submitted a letter to the Court, telling the Court about the sadness she felt for her child that would never lead a normal life.
