(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Fire Department was kept busy Thursday, responding to three calls within about 12 hours.
Public Information Officer Jordanne Shockley said firefighters responded to a mutual aid call shortly after 1:30 in the afternoon for a grass fire at 1503 170th Road. However, shortly after being paged the call was canceled because the fire was out.
Shockley says the department was called to a car fire at the Pemberton Village Apartments on North 1st Street shortly before 5:15 in the evening. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the engine compartment on fire. However, Fire Chief Gary Shear said they were able extinguish the fire before it traveled to the interior of the car.
Then shortly after 12:40 Friday morning the department was called to 530 Oregon Street for a smoke detector going off. Upon arrival, the department found a skillet burning on the stove. Shear says the residents had fallen asleep.
