(KAIR)--The city of Atchison debuted its new single source recycling service earlier this week, and officials are very happy with what they call a successful start.
City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont says that “Everything looks really clean so far. I am really impressed at how well people have taken to this new program. The cart placement...there is a little bit of work to do there, but everything has really gone really as smoothly as it could have possibly gone for implementing something like this city wide”.
Pregont reports that the first pickup on Tuesday produced nearly 2,600 pounds of recyclable material, and the Wednesday collection produced approximately 2,400 pounds of material. He says “That works out to about somewhere between 9% and 11% of what we collected on those days. Our goal for the year is to get up to 15%. So we've got some work to do to get some more volume in there, but this is a heck of a good start”.
Pregont says pickups will continue this week for those with a green lid on their cart, and collection of blue lid carts will start Monday.
If you do not have a cart and are interested in taking part in this free service. Pregont says you can sign up by either calling the city shop at 367-5561 or online at cityofatchison.com/recycle.
