(KNZA)--A Kansas City, Missouri man is facing charges in a deadly New Year's Day crash in Buchanan County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 25-year-old Rasheed Cottonham has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated for a crash that claimed the life of his 24-year-old passenger, Kansas City, Missouri resident Thomas Aaron.

The crash happened just after 7:30 New year's Day morning on U.S. 169 Highway about four miles south of St. Joseph. The Patrol says Cottonham was northbound when his car traveled off the highway and overturned, coming to rest in a pasture.

Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.  Cottonham was transported to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph for treatment of moderate injuries.

KQ2-TV reports Cottonham is scheduled to appear in a Buchanan County courtroom on Tuesday morning.
