(KAIR)--With the holiday shopping season in full swing, shoppers across the area can run the risk of unintentionally having their packages end up in the wrong hands.
Some shoppers may leave recently purchases packages in their vehicle while they continue to shop. Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie says that if you do this, you should take some precautions such as locking the doors. Laurie says that by locking the vehicle doors, any potential thieves could be deterred from stealing any packages left inside. Laurie also suggests covering the packages or placing them in the truck so they are totally out of sight.
There is also an increased risk of theft when packages delivered by a postal service are left unattended at a residence. Laurie says that if you are going to have packages delivered to your home, you should have someone available to either sign for the package, or just simply be there to accept it so it is not left unattended on your porch.
Laurie adds that there has not been an increase in package theft in Atchison County, but the proper safety precautions should still be taken.
