(KLZA)-- The Falls City Board of Education met Monday night.
Superintendent Tim Heckinlively had good news for the Board members Monday night. He learned Monday afternoon that District 56 has been awarded an EPA grant to help pay for a new school bus. The grant will pay 25-percent or up to $20,000 for a new route bus to replace the oldest bus in the fleet. The Superintendent expects to utilize the funds to help purchase a 65-passenger route bus.
Transportation Director Rob Baker prepared the grant application. Under the normal rotation this would have been the year for the school district to replace two vans in the fleet but with the grant the route bus will be purchased instead.
The money is federal funds awarded to the state of Nebraska, which then comes up with the criteria to award the grants.
During the Board Presidents report John Martin presented plaques to retiring Board members Teresa Olberding and Tedd Gilkerson.
Olberding served eight years on the District 56 Board and Gilkerson served nearly two years, taking the position mid-term due to the death of Board member Kathy Bartek. In January Richard Malcolm will be seated for a 4-year term on the Board and June Bowers will fill a two-year term on the Falls City Board of Education.
Board members also approved a number of policy revisions on first reading and approved on second and final reading policies reviewed in November.
The Board went into executive session for the annual Superintendent evaluation following the conclusion of the regular business.
