(KNZA)--A former Jefferson County fire chief has pleaded not guilty to charges of misuse of public funds and theft.
The Topeka Capital Journal reports 59-year-old John Gordon, of Valley Falls, entered the plea Thursday in Jefferson County District Court to the felony charges.
Authorities allege Gordon stole between $1,000 and $25,000 while serving as fire chief of Valley Falls-based Jefferson County Fire Department #11.
He was arrested in late June by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. His arrest followed an investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Gordon is due back in court in January.
