NEK-CAP Awarded Grant to Provide Rental Assistance
11/19/2014

(KNZA)--Hiawatha-based NEK-CAP is among 13 non-profits and public housing authorities statewide that will share nearly $1.7 million in Tenant Based Rental Assistance to help as families obtain safe, affordable housing of their choice.

The funding is through the federal HOME Investment Partnerships Program, and is administered by the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation.

NEK-CAP will receive $150,000 to provide rental assistance and help with utility and security deposits for income-eligible households.  NEK-CAP serves 7 northeast Kansas counties—including Atchison, Brown, Doniphan, Jackson, Jefferson, Marshall and Nemaha.

Christine Reimler with the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation says the assistance ensures the families will pay no more than 30 percent of their income for rent.

Awarded annually, the grants  are based on a community's housing needs, the number of households estimated to be served and the organization's experience in administering TBRA funding. Public housing authorities and non-profit organizations may apply for grants of up to $300,000.
