(KLZA)-- About 15 people showed up for a public hearing on groundwater rules and regulations during the November 13th Nemaha Natural Resources District Board of Directors meeting in Tecumseh.
Several of those attending added comments or asked questions about rules changes. Most expressed their concerns about the proposed increase in distance required between high-capacity wells and public water supply wells.
The proposed new rules called for increasing the space from 1,000 feet to one mile. Other significant changes proposed included a requirement of at least 500 feet of distance between high capacity and domestic or livestock wells. Some revision of the ranking system for scoring wells for approval, the fee for late permits and transfer requirements were also incorporated into the proposed new rules.
The Programs and Projects Committee recommended approval of the rules with a change in spacing between high capacity wells and public water supply wells being changed to one-half mile. All the other proposed changes were approved as presented. The new rules are effective as of December 15.
