(KAIR)--Halloween is fast approaching, and that means young ghosts and goblins will be taking to the streets in search of candy.
Despite the fun thrills and chills included with the haunted holiday, real life tragedy is a possibility if basic safety tips aren't followed.
Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says children should always be accompanied by an adult while on the candy hunt, dressed in proper fitting costumes. He says most of the safety issues occur at dusk or after dark. Children are dressed in dark clothing and dashing across the street, and very often wearing masks or dark clothing that makes it very difficult for them to see. Additionally, only well lit homes should be visited, preferably those whose occupants are known.
Cheri Sage, Director for Safe Kids Kansas, adds that motorists should be especially cautious as excited trick-or-treaters make their way through neighborhoods, as kids are more than twice as likely to be hit by a vehicle and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year.
