(KNZA)--A Sunday afternoon report of a reckless driver, traveling from Fairview on U.S. Highway 36, apparently en route to Hiawatha, then becomes a report of shots fired in the Fairview area, and ultimately ends in the arrest of five suspects.
According to a joint press release from the Brown County Sheriff 's Office and the Hiawatha Police Department, the suspect vehicle was stopped at 311 North 8th Street in Hiawatha, and two suspects, 35-year-old Walter Lee Cole, of Morrill, and 19-year-old Angel Spomer, of Centralia, were arrested, while a third suspect, 17-year-old Braiden Guido, fled on foot.
Cole was taken into custody for aggravated assault while Spomer was arrested for felony obstruction.
While the search for Guido was launched, the investigation continued, and led to the arrests of two additional suspects in connection with the case, 39-year-old Johni Spitzengel, and 29-year-old Adam Johnson, both of Hiawatha. Both face a charge of obstruction.
Meanwhile, the investigation kept authorities focused on Hiawatha's 311 North 8th Street, the residence of Guido.
A search warrant was executed at the home around 7:00 Monday morning by the Kansas Highway Patrol Special Response Team, and Guido was allegedly found hiding in the attic.
Also providing assistance during the investigation were the Police Departments of Hiawatha, Horton, Sabetha and the Sac and Fox and Kickapoo Tribal, as well as the Nemaha County Sheriff's Office.
The investigation led to strong speculation in the Hiawatha area, but authorities, to the contrary of the rumors, state that no shots were ever confirmed to have been fired in the City of Hiawatha and no injuries occurred.
